Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced that a Kake man was sentenced in federal court in Juneau for illegally transporting a marine mammal in violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

On January 10, 2011, Troy Richard Hanson, 32, a resident of Kake, Alaska, was sentenced by United States Magistrate Judge Leslie C. Longenbaugh to pay a fine of $250, serve 50 hours community service, and one year of probation.

According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Jack S. Schmidt, Hanson illegally transported a sea otter (Enhydra Lutris) carcass from Grave Island to Kake, Alaska. Hanson admitted to a National Oceanic and Atomospheric Administration (NOAA) Officer and to a Special Agent with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) he knew that it was illegal for him to possess and transport the animal.

Ms. Loeffler commended NOAA and USFWS for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Hanson.
